How the ECS Works
The endocannabinoid system is one of the most widespread receptor networks in the human body — and one of the least taught in medical schools.

What is the ECS?
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a retrograde signaling network — it works backwards from the receiving neuron to the sending neuron. When a neuron fires too strongly, the receiving cell produces endocannabinoids (anandamide, 2-AG) that travel back to suppress the signal. Cannabis cannabinoids fit this system because they are structurally similar to your body's own endocannabinoids.

CB1 — The Psychoactive Pathway
CB1 receptors are concentrated in the central nervous system — brain and spinal cord. They regulate mood, memory, pain perception, appetite, and coordination. THC's binding to CB1 produces euphoria, altered time perception, and intoxication. CB1 is also present in peripheral tissues — heart, lungs, gut — where it governs autonomic functions.

CB2 — The Immune Pathway
CB2 receptors are concentrated in immune tissues — spleen, tonsils, bone marrow, and immune cells throughout the body. They regulate inflammation, immune cell migration, and the body's response to injury. CB2 activation does not produce psychoactivity. CBD, CBG, and CBC all have CB2 affinity — which explains their anti-inflammatory profiles without intoxication.
The ratio of THC to CBD — and increasingly to CBG, CBN, or THCV — determines the character of the experience more than any single cannabinoid alone.
