Live resin: frozen fresh, extracted with hydrocarbons.

The plant is frozen at harvest; the extraction uses butane and propane. Then the solvent is purged out.

Vintage botanical plate of live resin: fresh-frozen plant and hydrocarbon extraction

"Live" means fresh-frozen

Like live rosin, the "live" in live resin refers to the starting material: cannabis harvested and immediately frozen, never dried or cured. Freezing locks in the volatile terpenes that evaporate during traditional drying. Everything prized about live resin's aroma starts with that freeze.

The hydrocarbon part

Live resin is extracted with hydrocarbon solvents — typically butane, propane, or a blend. The frozen plant material is washed with the solvent, which strips the resin efficiently at low temperatures. Then comes purging: heat and vacuum remove the solvent from the extract.

Licensed live resin is lab-tested for residual solvents. That test result — on the COA, matched to the batch number — is how you verify the purge did its job. The method uses chemicals; the testing verifies they're gone.

Live resin vs. live rosin

Same starting idea (fresh-frozen plant), different extraction road. Live resin uses hydrocarbon solvents; live rosin uses only heat and pressure. The names sound like siblings and they are — but the methods sit on opposite sides of the solvent/solventless split from article 01.

Neither method is a quality verdict. The freeze is what both are really about: preserving what the living plant smelled like.
